For Black History Month 2023 we wanted to shine a light on the ORIGINAL Black neighborhood of Detroit: Black Bottom. Looking back to remember and move forward is important, so the significance of this neighborhood to the city’s trajectory cannot be understated.
Black Bottom and neighboring Paradise Valley became the epicenters of Black population growth in SE Michigan during the Great Migration. Believe it or not, conditions were harsh in some ways. However, the community had it’s benefits. Eventually it would become a ire of the city and targeted for erasure.
