Hello everyone. Thank you so much for attending our General Body meeting last week on April 19th. We had a packed house at Bamboo in downtown Detroit. With over 70 members and guests in attendance, it was our intent to deliver a concise message of WHY the organization exists, WHAT we do to fulfil that driver, and how you can GET INVOLVED with the organization internally and externally. In case you missed the meeting, our President, Darvell T. Powell, and our Social Chair, Chanelle Williams, delivered some key points:
- Our ultimate WHY is to provide a space for Black young professionals to connect while improving ourselves and the community.
- We want to remove silos within Detroit’s Black young professional population.
- We are stepping up mentorship and volunteerism this year in new ways.
- Our Social and Personal pillars are being interwoven to better meet member needs.
- Key events are “members-only” but membership is still free through August
- There are several internal openings to be filled. Please apply. Training and mentorship will be provided.
To make this meeting happen without a glitch, we have a few individuals and organizations stepped up:
- Brian Thomas, The Professional Development Trailblazer, was our key guest speaker of the evening. He provided an impactful message on how success is just the beginning for young Black professionals in 2017. Please check out his website at brianthomasspeaks.com
- Xav’s Catering provided our tasty meal for the evening. Created by Xavier of Xav’s Catering especially for the appetite of hungry professionals hitting a BYP meeting after work, he poured love into everything you ate that evening. Please check out his Facebook page at facebook.com/xavscater
- Denise Figurski, a close friend of our organization and the Special Events manager for the Neighborhood Service Organization, introduced new members and guests to the purpose and mission of NSO as well as opportunities for members to volunteer directly with NSO. Please check out their website at nso-mi.org
- Key members of our leadership and planning team stayed after everyone else to clean and pack up everything. We thank these particular individuals for their outstanding support:
- Teena Cathey
- Latecia Jones
- William Grandberry
