Last year a team of over 20 Black Young Professionals descended upon Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit on a cold Saturday morning to help pack food. They would end up building comradery and friendships would be formed while carrying out this simple activity that turned out to be challenging and fun in the heart of the city while fulfilling an important need.
Well, we’re doing it again! This time, it won’t be cold! So leave your coat at home.
This is a fun, exciting, simple volunteer activity helping a well-known local food bank prepare orders for dozens of local outreach and charity organizations (soup kitchens, shelters, and neighborhood pantries). Gleaners Food Bank has been operating in the Detroit community for over 40 years and is one of the primary provision providers to neighborhood organizations which are at the front lines of passing out food out to those in need. Gleaners has tons of orders to pack each day, so it is a tradition of many companies, teams, associations, and other local organization to send volunteers to Gleaners to help at least once a year.
Afterwards, we’ll follow it up with Brunch once again at a new local restaurant in downtown/midtown!
Note: It is imperative that you arrive by 8:45am so that Gleaners doesn’t have to wait on us to form our teams. If you are late you may be placed on a non-BYP team.
